On the first Sunday in May (6th May) we are running a ukulele workshop at the Peninsula Folk Club, starting around 5 30pm. We have been asked to make the workshop about “Ukulele Techniques”.
There are only a handful of ukulele luthiers in Australia and they all come from a musical background. Chris Dovey of Rosebud came to music and SPUKES through his skills in fine woodworking.
During the summer season some of our members were looking for colourful clothes for our performances. We’ve had good reports on shirts from Island Style Clothing, an online store based in Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
St Patrick’s Day 2018 saw SPUKES back at Ti Tree Lodge to perform a solid 1 hour set of Irish Songs. We added a few vintage Irish numbers this year and were lucky to have Eily Watson leading the ensemble for those songs.
I took the “Monday ukulele players” group up to the Main Ridge Petanque Club on Friday 16th March to provide pre-dinner entertainment. Being St Patrick’s eve the theme was Celtic of course.
We first played at the Kite Festival four years ago. At that stage we were a newly formed group and still finding our feet. Fast forward 4 years….
The Rye Beach Bridge Club will be holding their Annual Congress in the big hall at the Rosebud Memorial Hall over the weekend of March 10th and 11th. The Swiss Pairs competition will be held on Saturday afternoon and SPUKES will entertain during their afternoon break.
There was plenty of colour added to an excellent performance by 38 of our players at Ti Tree Lodge. Nearly everyone followed the dress code and sported Hawaiian or tropical garb along with leis and appropriate hats!
Two events are coming up before Easter – Hawaiian day at Ti Tree Lodge and the Rosebud Kite Festival.
